Talent vs Service

Do not let the tyranny of your talent ruin your calling. It is only if you stay a servant that you will not become a slave. A servant of one’s calling has authority; a slave of talent has only himself.

Martin Schlesinger in The Joy of Life’s Unspeakable Beauty

Light and Shadow

Inspired by the Florentine Camerata, Mere Beauty is a 21st century community of artists and writers.

In the mid-sixteenth century (1573-1578), a Camerata assembled a small group whose energy and enthusiasm for Greek drama helped give birth to Italian opera. In a troubled world, great works of art are a reservoir of beauty. As we experience beautiful things, we may reap benefits of health and well-being. Our world is currently in need of mere beauty in all its forms. For creators and observers of art works, that is good news. The transmission of beautiful works from Great Tradition writers, painters, sculptors, architects, and musicians is vital to an aware and developing culture.
